Planted tank planning
Substrate depth for planted aquariums
Plan depth around root growth, layout shape, and the substrate type you intend to use.
How to estimate substrate depth for planted aquariums, including flat layouts, slopes, and root-space planning.
Depth is part of the layout
A planted tank may use a shallow front, deeper back, or pockets of extra depth around heavy root feeders.
- Use the calculator depth as an average for the whole footprint.
- Add extra allowance for steep slopes or raised planting areas.
- Check plant and livestock requirements before choosing sharp or specialist substrates.
Estimate, then adjust the aquascape
The result is most useful for buying enough bags before layout day. Final placement can still shift as hardscape is added.
- Hardscape can reduce the substrate volume needed in some areas.
- Slopes often settle after filling and maintenance.
- Keeping one spare bag can help with later rescapes or topping up.
Depth planning examples
| Layout | Planning depth | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Simple decorative tank | 2-4 cm | Often shallow and mostly visual. |
| General planted tank | 5-7 cm | Allows more room for plant roots. |
| Sloped aquascape | Average depth varies | Measure the front and back, then estimate an average. |
Substrate depth depends on livestock, plants, and tank design. Check species-specific requirements.
