Aquascape layout
How to estimate substrate for a sloped aquascape
Use an average depth for the calculator, then add allowance for steep slopes and hardscape.
A practical method for estimating average substrate depth when an aquarium layout slopes from front to back.
Use average depth
A sloped layout has different front and back depths, so the calculator works best with a realistic average depth.
- Measure or choose a front depth and back depth.
- Use a midpoint as the average depth for a simple slope.
- Add allowance for very steep banks or raised planting zones.
Expect settling
Substrate can settle after filling, planting, and maintenance, especially in deeper sloped areas.
- Keep some spare substrate for topping up.
- Use hardscape or supports if the slope needs structure.
- Avoid assuming the initial dry slope will stay exactly the same.
Substrate depth depends on livestock, plants, and tank design. Check species-specific requirements.
